About Us

Our Mission: To facilitate the success of independent pharmacy, allowing for optimum patient care in the community and long-term care environments.

While the pharmacy environment has changed considerably since the day we opened our doors in 1934, our dedication to independent pharmacy has remained the same. Established and led by independent pharmacists, Value Drug is committed to providing transparency in our pricing and optimizing manufacturer relationships and purchasing power to improve buying conditions for our members.

With the ever-changing and competitive market conditions that exist today, choose the wholesaler that can help you meet the challenges facing independent pharmacy and provide innovative, valuable programs and services to increase your pharmacy’s growth and prosperity.

A pharmacy is no longer just a place to get prescriptions filled. Over time, the pharmacy has evolved from an apothecary to a one-stop healthcare destination offering clinical services and convenience items that meet the needs of patients and customers. Value Drug realizes that as the needs of consumers change, so too do the needs of independent pharmacy owners.

As competition increases and network access decreases, as reimbursements shrink and regulations expand, you need more than just a wholesaler—you need a partner. At Value Drug, we understand the regulatory issues and marketplace challenges that independent pharmacists must contend with each day. We’ve assembled a diverse portfolio of programs and services that satisfy both the customer’s need for convenience and low-cost healthcare and the pharmacist’s need to increase growth, efficiency and profitability.

History

Value Drug Company was formed in 1934 as a cooperative of 19 independent pharmacists in Altoona, PA to consolidate their purchasing power. What started as a small business with a staff of five serving local customers from a 1,000 square-foot building has grown into a sophisticated company with a leading edge 205,000 square-foot distribution center. Our state-of-the-art technology has enabled us to achieve greater efficiencies and expand geographically.

No longer known solely as a pharmaceutical wholesaler, today Value Drug also provides retail and specialty pharmacy services, long-term care pharmacy support, immunization service offerings, 340B authorized distribution, telemedicine opportunities, and many other clinical service programs. We developed these programs to help offset shrinking reimbursements, keep you competitive and increase your profitability.

In 2011, Value Drug established Value Specialty Pharmacy (VSP) to provide independent pharmacies with an option to send specialty prescriptions for fulfillment without utilizing traditional PBM owned mail order facilities. Dually accredited by both URAC and ACHC, VSP is a preferred referral option for patients requiring complex medications for chronic illnesses. We also offer the support services to allow some specialty products to be filled at retail. CP Specialty Pharmacy Services™ was developed in 2016 to enable community pharmacies to dispense specialty medications at their pharmacy.

Value Drug Company Makes “Best Places to Work in PA” List for 2018

Value Drug Company has been named one of the Top-100 Best Places to Work in PA for 2018. The awards program, created in 2000, is one of the first statewide programs of its kind in the country. The program is a public/private partnership between Team Pennsylvania Foundation, the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, the Pennsylvania State Council of the Society for Human Resource Management, and the Central Penn Business Journal.

“We are thrilled as a company to be honored by our team members as a great place to work, because we certainly appreciate them”, said Greg Drew, President of Value Drug Company, “We have been working hard, with a great Human Resources Department leading the charge, to develop a culture where people feel empowered and appreciated.”

The Best Places to Work in PA survey and awards program was designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in Pennsylvania that benefit the state's economy and its workforce. Employers are categorized based upon the total number of employees they have in the United States: 15 to 99 employees, 100 to 250 employees, or more than 250 employees.

Value Drug Company will be recognized at the Best Places to Work in PA awards banquet on Thursday, November 29, 2018, at the Lancaster County Convention Center in Lancaster, PA. Rankings will be revealed at the ceremony.

Community Involvement

Operation Our Town

Value Drug is committed to addressing the increasing prevalence of opioid abuse in our community and is actively involved in Operation Our Town, an organization that facilitates partnerships between the Blair County, PA community and local area businesses to fight drug abuse and crime through proven law enforcement, treatment and prevention techniques.

As a member of the Operation Our Town Pharmacy Roundtable, Value Drug is part of a diverse group of volunteers that are dedicated to ensuring the safety of pharmacy employees and patrons, improving relationships with local and state law enforcement and enhancing the commitment of pharmacies to reduce the supply of prescription opioids in their communities.

We believe that education can help minimize the impact of diverted prescription opioids, and each quarter we publish and distribute an informative newsletter featuring articles on topics that we believe are of interest to practicing community pharmacists and their staff, as well as a list of resources and instructions for acquiring additional information. Through our involvement in Operation Our Town, Value Drug endeavors to establish pharmacists as key stakeholders in the fight against opioid abuse.
